Bioremediation and Biodegradation

Biotechnology is not only useful in medicine and agriculture, but also for one part of the world that affects us all and that is the environment. Different organisms, more commonly microorganisms, are being engineered and adapted by scientist to find ways how to clean the polluted environment with permanent results. Biological processes are the key players in removing the contaminants from the environment and biotechnology is trying to find ways how to use the huge versatility of microorganisms to alter and remove them which is essential to sustain the development of our society, but to decrease the effect it has on the environment.

Biodegradation uses processes when organic substances are degenerated by enzymes that have been taken from other living organism. This is an often used in waste management and environmental remediation, also known as bioremediation. Bioremediation uses microorganisms, green plants and their enzymes to bring the polluted environment back to its original condition. Biotechnology has enabled to make bioremediation attack for example specific soil contaminants which is most commonly used to clean up oil spills both created by humans as well as natural seepages.

The development of bioremediation technology will probably accelerate as the functional genomic and metagenomic approaches are making the information how different pathways and regulations to carbon flux in certain environments and for specific compounds more obvious.
