- Ixion, World Leader in Oxalate-related Disease Technology, Secures Two More Patents
-
ALACHUA, Fla--June 18, 2001-- In its quest to treat oxalate-related diseases, Ixion Biotechnology has received two new patents (US 6,200,562 B1 and US 6,214,980 B1) relating to the diagnosis and treatment of excess oxalate. This is yet another milestone for Ixion, which since 1995 has dedicated one of its two core drug development programs to treatments for oxalate-related conditions, including kidney stones, enteric hyperoxaluria, primary hyperoxaluria, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, and vulvodynia.
The patents cover a method for reducing absorption of dietary oxalate utilizing oxalate-degrading microbes or enzymes. The other claims in the patents are directed to genes encoding key enzymes instrumental to the breakdown of oxalate and further, to the use of these enzyme systems for diagnostic purposes.
"Our development work has brought us closer to our goal of enhancing the quality of life of the millions of people who suffer with oxalate-related conditions. The past 12 months have been stellar for Ixion, having been awarded more grant money for its work in oxalate-related conditions than during any other year in its history. In addition, we continue to build upon an already strong family of oxalate-related patents", stated Ixion's Vice President of Corporate Development, Louis G. Kessler, Ph.D.. Harmeet Sidhu, Ph.D., Vice President and Director of Research of Ixion's Oxalate Division is a co-inventor on one patent with Ammon B. Peck, Ph.D., of the University of Florida and on the other with Milton J. Allison, Ph.D., of Iowa State University. "Given the progress we have made recently in our understanding of oxalate-related conditions, it is rewarding to see the timely issuance of patents that encompass Ixion's therapeutic approach", said Dr. Sidhu.
Ixion's other development program is a stem cell approach to treat insulin-dependent diabetes. Ixion has demonstrated the feasibility of using adult, somatic stem cells to produce new pancreatic stem cell preparations for the treatment of diabetes. The Company owns, or has licensed exclusive rights to patents in both the oxalate and diabetes fields.
