Håkan S. Edstrom Joins Ixion Board

ALACHUA, Fla - July 24, 2001-Ixion Biotechnology Inc. has elected Håkan S. Edstrom, president and chief operating officer of the MannKind Corporation, to the Ixion Board of Directors to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Per-Olof Wallstrõm. Ixion specializes in the treatment of metabolic disorders, including a stem cell treatment for diabetes and a treatment for oxalate-related diseases, such as kidney stones. MannKind is a Los Angeles, Calif.-based late-stage biotechnology company, with subsidiaries in the areas of cancer, allergy, asthma, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and drug delivery devices.

Before joining MannKind, Edstrom was senior corporate vice president and president of Bausch & Lomb, Americas Region and was an executive committee member of B&L, the world's largest supplier of eye care products. His experience includes a variety of executive positions with Pharmacia & Upjohn and Chiron Vision. Edstrom is also a member of the board of Gimbel Vision International, a public company, and is a nominee for the board of Q-Med, AB (publ.). He holds an MBA from the Stockholm School of Economics.

"Mr. Edstrom adds to a strong team of directors who are executives with a broad range of experience in early- and late-stage biotechnology companies. Mr. Edstrom's extensive sales, marketing and operations experience will be an important asset as Ixion commences the clinical development of its products," said Weaver H. Gaines, chairman and CEO of Ixion.

Ixion, the only company in the world working with the non-pathogenic oxalate degrading bacterium, O. formigenes, holds worldwide exclusive licenses to patents and pending patents for treatments of diabetes and oxalate-related disorders. Since 1995, Ixion has dedicated one of its two core drug development programs to treatments for oxalate-related conditions, including kidney stones, enteric hyperoxaluria, primary hyperoxaluria, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, and vulvodynia. Ixion's other development program is a stem cell approach to treat insulin-dependent diabetes. The biotech company has demonstrated the feasibility of using adult, somatic stem cells to produce new pancreatic stem cell preparations for the treatment of diabetes.
