What are the reasons that ethics has become a big issue in the area of biotechnology?

I understand the implications of ethics in the field, but I'ld like to further find out why it is important to do so, what will happen if we disregard ethics?

Answer:
Ethics are important in everything. The reason it is such a vocal part of biotechnology is because biotechnology is poorly understood by the general populace. Not addressing the fears of the general populace means an end to biotech research or application of biotech research.
