Vulvodynia (Vestibulitis)   Links

Vulvodynia is a disorder affecting perhaps 200,000 women in the US characterized by intense burning and itching of the vulva. Pathologically, the afflicted area shows signs of chronic inflammation and the condition often occurs in conjunction with interstitial cystitis, a chronic irritation of the bladder. Women suffering from vulvodynia complain of an inability to wear undergarments, sit comfortably, exercise, work, have sexual intercourse, and/or psychological disability. Often, in desperation, these women will undergo mutilating surgical procedures, usually with little relief. In 1991, Dr. Clive Solomons and co-workers provided evidence that a women who suffered from chronic vulvodynia had episodes of elevated urinary oxalate and pH which coincided with severe flare-ups. In a follow-up study, some 25 women with vulvodynia were treated with calcium citrate and a diet reduced in oxalate content. Of these, 30% had relief of symptoms, 50% had partial relief of symptoms, with 20% achieving no relief.
